Eurocup Finals Game 1: Campbell leads host Strasbourg to narrow win
After trailing for most of the first three quarters, Strasbourg beat Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul 66-62 Friday in Game 1 of the Eurocup Finals. The margin had grown to 8, but Galatasaray scored the game’s final 4 points to lower the hill it must climb in the return leg if it is to become the 2016 Eurocup champion and claim the resulting ticket to the 2016-17 Turkish Airlines Euroleague. Galatasaray hosts Game 2 of the two-game total-points series on Wednesday in Istanbul. Louis Campbell starred for the winners with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, while Matt Howard, who had half the points in an 8-1 fourth quarter run, and Jeremy Leloup added 11 points each for Strasbourg. Vladimir Micov paced Galatasaray with 17 points, Blake Schilb posted 12 points and 8 rebounds and Chuck Davis came off the bench for 11 points, including the basket that sent him into second place on the Eurocup’s career scoring charts. Davis moved past Bulgarian great Todor Stoykov and ended the night with 1,141 career Eurocup points, but he remains 46 behind Mire Chatman, who won the then-called ULEB Cup in 2006 with dynamo Moscow, for the all-time lead.
