On the Road to 2014: Birsel Vardarlı has big Expectations for 2014
One of the nominees for FIBA Europe Player of the Year, the Izmir native Birsel Vardarlı is looking forward to the year ahead.
With less than a minute to go in the first period of Turkey’s quarter-final matchup with Belarus at EuroBasket Women 2013 in June, Birsel Vardarlı dribbled up court. After first looking to set the offense from behind the arc, she spun right towards the baseline, leaving a frozen Belarus defense in her tracks as she cut to basket and finished with a layup.
It was vintage Vardarlı, the point guard for the Turkish Senior Women’s National Team and Fenerbahçe, who is a nominee for 2013 FIBA Europe Women’s Player of the Year.
“[The nomination] is a great source of pride,” Vardarlı said. “For three years I’ve made important contributions to my club team and the national team in Europe. My nomination [for this award] is the result of this.”
Turkey finished EuroBasket Women 2013 on the podium for the second consecutive tournament, winning bronze, in no small part thanks to Vardarlı. She finished the tournament averaging 6.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. Her assist average was second best in the championship.
“With her ability to play and manage successfully both the offensive and defensive parts of the game, in recent years [Vardarlı] has been the most import point guard in our country and Europe,” national team Head Coach Ceyhun Yıldızoğlu said.
Birso, as her teammates call her, has a penchant for playing her best when it counts most.
In the EuroBasket 2013 bronze medal game against Serbia, Vardarlı was dominant, finishing with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a 92–71 victory. At EuroBasket 2011 she was also critical in Turkey’s 68–62 semi-final win over France, in which she recorded 14 Points and 5 assists. The victory secured Turkey’s first ever European Championship medal in women’s basketball.
On December 25 she again put on a show on the big stage. Vardarlı shined against Turkish Women’s Basketball League arch rival Galatasaray Odeabank, recording 13 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in a 79–67 win at home.
“Generally, I’m a player that likes to get the team involved, but in those matches I had a different focus because the team needed me more,” Vardarlı said.
The Izmir native began her youth sporting career playing football. When she could not find a girls team to play on, she tried Taekwondo before her school’s basketball coach noticed the 11-year-old’s talent for the game.
“From the moment I began playing basketball I took a huge interest in it,” Vardarlı said. “I was constantly following foreign leagues, and trying to mirror what I saw in my own game.”
But as a young player, Vardarlı did not necessarily feel destined for the national team or professional success.
“When I was in Izmir one day my coach said to me, ‘You will be the national team’s guard,’” Vardarlı said. “That seemed a long way off and difficult to me.”
Only when she was named to the U20 National Team did she feel she was on her way to the Senior National Team.
When Turkey hosted and participated in its first EuroBasket Women in 2005, a 20-year-old Vardali made the roster. Her best performance came in an 82–76 loss to Lithuania, in which she scored 14 points.
From that point on, Vardarlı has been with the national team every step of the way.
“Birsel is a very talented player,” said Galatasaray centre and Senior National Team Captain Nevriye Yılmaz, who also played with Vardarlı at Fenerbahçe. “She is one the most important, unchangeable parts on the national team.”
From EuroBasket medals to a fifth-place finish at the 2012 Olympics, Vardarlı has brought her game to a higher level at each successive tournament.
“In recent years, both on the national team and her club, the success that she has achieved is the biggest indicator that she continues to improve,” Yıldızoğlu said.
Vardarlı spends her winters as the captain and point guard for Fenerbahçe, where she has won six straight Turkish Women’s Basketball League Championships. Last season, in addition to success in Turkey, she led the Canaries to a second place finish in EuroLeague Women.
This year, Fenerbahçe is off to a torrid start in EuroLeague Women, boasting a perfect 6–0 record. She’s averaging 4 assists per game.
“At Fenerbahçe my only desire is to be able to be European champion,” Vardarlı recently told HaberTürk. “After achieving this, I think I might be able to leave basketball!”
But a European Championship isn’t Vardarlı’s only goal for 2014. As the FIBA World Championship for Women, and the opportunity to play in a major international tournament before home fans for the first time in nine years, approaches, expectations are high.
“In 2011 we were second in Europe, [then] we made our Olympic dreams come true,” Vardarlı said. “But we’re not satisfied with these successes. Now there’s the 2014 World Championship we will be hosting. We have big goals for [the World Championship].”
