NOWITZKI OFFICIALLY RETIRES FROM NATIONAL TEAM
EUROBASKET 2017 QUALIFIERS
German legend Dirk Nowitzki has definitively confirmed his retirement from international duty in an interview with the Sunday version of the Bild newspaper.
"The last game at FIBA EuroBasket 2015 was my last game for Germany," the 37-year-old superstar said.
"It had felt like it at the moment anyway.
"I had tears in my eyes, it was what a farewell feels like."
That thrilling encounter in Berlin against eventual champions Spain finished with Germany suffering a 77-76 loss which brought their FIBA EuroBasket 2015 campaign to a premature end, as the Group B hosts did not manage to advance to the Round of 16 in Lille.
Despite the setback, the sold-out crowd in Berlin Arena roared in an emotional standing ovation which lasted for well over 20 minutes and Nowitzki failed to hold back his tears.
Visibly influenced by the unprecedented fan reaction, Nowitzki kept open the possibility of suiting up for the national team once again next summer in the event Germany were selected to host one of the three FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, hence gaining a chance at participating in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Players such as Dennis Schroeder will need to step up in the place of Nowitzki as German basketball moves forward |
Last Tuesday, the Executive Committee of FIBA announced that Italy, Philippines and Serbia had been attributed the hosting rights for the three events that will determine the last holders of a ticket to the Rio Games.
It subsequently means that Germany's attentions will instead turn to the EuroBasket 2017 Qualifiers against neighbours Netherlands, Denmark and Austria in September of this year.
"We must not be angry or disappointed," the Dallas Mavericks star said.
"We had at EuroBasket last year the chance to qualify for the Olympics."
Nowitzki, widely considered as one of the best European players of all time, made his senior debut for Germany in February 1997 and earned 153 international caps, scoring a total of 3,045 points in the national team jersey.
He led Germany to third place on the podium at the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis, averaging 24 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.
Three years later in Belgrade he carried Germany to the silver medal at EuroBasket 2005 and was proclaimed Tournament MVP in recognition of his outlandish tournament average of 26.1 points and 10.6
In 1998, he joined the Dallas Mavericks, for whom he still pulls on the singlet today, and quickly ascended to franchise player status and one of the most recognisable and respected players in the NBA and globally.A sports personality who transcends basketball both in his native country and the rest of Europe, Nowitzki was selected as the flag bearer for Germany in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
In 2006, he averaged 27 points and 11.7 rebounds in the play-offs to propel Dallas to their first title series in franchise history, albeit they fell to a Miami Heat side led by Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal.
In 2011 however, Nowitzki and Dallas repeated the feat and this time around the Mavericks prevailed 4-2 over Miami of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to lift their maiden NBA trophy, while the German legend walked away with Finals MVP honours.
Nowitzki has also earned the 2007 NBA MVP title (Regular Season) while he is a 13-time All-Star who currently sits in sixth place on the NBA all-time scorers' list, higher than any other player born outside the USA.
