TURKEY CAN COUNT ON ILYASOVA

EUROBASKET 2015

By Dimitris Kontos

When Turkey head coach Ergin Ataman said last month that his team could aspire to a medal at EuroBasket 2015, he added one condition.
Ataman wants all four Turkish NBA players, in Ersan IlyasovaÖmer AsikFurkan Aldemir and Enes Kanter to be on board the plane which carries the national team to Berlin, where Turkey commence their EuroBasket campaign.
Perhaps not accidentally, the first name the Turkish coach mentioned when expressing the wish to count with this high-octane frontcourt, was that of the Milwaukee Bucks power forward.
It looks like coach Ataman is going to get his wish.
"Yes definitely, I've been thinking about it," Ilyasova replied to fibaeurope.com when asked if he would be willing to grant his return to the Turkish national team for EuroBasket 2015.
"Last summer I missed it [FIBA Basketball World Cup 2014] in Spain because I was injured, but this summer, hopefully, I will play.
"If I go through the whole season and I feel good and I am healthy, I want to play."
So there is, here too, one condition. It comes with good reason.
The 28-year-old Ilyasova has a fantastic national team track record, with four EuroBasket and two FIBA World Cup tournaments under his belt, including a decisive role (13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game) in Turkey's 2010 silver medal success.
The Turkish forward however also has a troubled history of injury troubles and will use the NBA All-Star break to nurse a right groin strain.
Ilyasova already missed several games because of a concussion and a broken nose, and the occurrence of these - quite unusual in basketball - injuries make him more cautious.
"It's not easy, I've had some injuries and now I have to wear a mask, which is kind of uncomfortable," he said.
"But I have to deal with it and in every game I will feel better.
"Hopefully this summer I will go but, as I said, I first have to finish the season feeling well."
Ilyasova is only one of several unfortunate Bucks players constraint to watch part of the season from the sidelines, but this appears to have strengthened his conviction in this Milwaukee team and their resilience this year.

The Bucks currently stand at 30-23, and apart from having already improved last year's record by leaps and bounds, they are virtually assured of a play-off spot in the Eastern Conference, barring a dramatic drop after the All-Star break.
"Injuries is part of the game but when you look at our team, even when we miss a couple of guys everybody else is doing their part to cover for them," the Turkish star said.
"I think we are doing a great job, we are still keeping our record above .500 (50% W/L percentage)."
Ilyasova does not utter the word play-offs though, just as he does not venture into any promises or predictions about Turkey's summer campaign when the discussion shifts back to EuroBasket 2015.
Many say that Turkey were drawn in the toughest first round group, as they will do battle in Berlin with Spain, Serbia, Italy, Iceland and hosts Germany.
"It's kind of always tough for us, you know?" Ilyasova replies jokingly when asked if this was the worst possible outcome of the draw for Turkey.
"For example, we are in a group in Germany playing in Berlin.
"But, when playing in these tournaments, you need to take it game by game.
"It is of course about how you start the tournament [in the first round].
"But in the past we have almost always started well, yet we we could not finish in the same way.
"So hopefully, this time around, we will start well and we will finish just as well."
