EuroLeague Women ... QF

EUROLEAGUE WOMEN: QUARTER-FINAL PLAY-OFFS PREVIEW

EUROLEAGUE WOMEN

We take a look at the match-ups in the EuroLeague Women Quarter-Final Play-Offs as the last eight teams standing compete across a best-of-three series in a bid to qualify for the prestigious 2016 Final Four.

While the visitors have some top level talent, it looks like UMMC will be big favourites on paper. However, Galatasaray can take some solace and indeed inspiration from the fact that the last time they played UMMC outside of the Regular Season, they won at the DIVS Arena in the 2014 Semi-Finals, en-route to their memorable first title. On that night it was Alba Torrens who torched the hosts, only this time she is in UMMC colours - as is Sancho Lyttle. This game is packed with players competing against their former clubs, with Diana Taurasi having also represented Galatasaray and Ann Wauters having played in the 2014 loss for UMMC. Emma Meesseman will play her first game in the competition against her Belgian compatriot. While UMMC will be expected to win, they have had a few close shaves this season on home soil, including a loss to Nadezhda.
- Galatasaray must pick themselves up from losing the Turkish Cup Final to Fenerbahce over the weekend.
- UMMC are the leading scorers in the competition with 75 points per game and Galatasaray have the second best defensive record, giving up only 59.2 points per game.
- Galatasaray play with incredible control and cough up fewer turnovers than any other team with just 11.8 per game.

This all-Russian affair looks to be finely balanced and much is likely to hinge on the all-important first game. Nadezhda head coach Roberto Iniguez has hailed home favourite DeWanna Bonner as the best player in the competition, although Kayla McBride, Anna Cruz and Angelica Robinson have all placed big displays and could do so again as Orenburg look to make history with a maiden Final Four appearance (they did however make a Final Eight in 2013). Dynamo Kursk reached the prestigious competition finale in their first-ever season and so are now bidding to collect back-to-back spots at the event. There is little doubt that the combination of veteran Latvian legend Anete Jekabsone and the highly productive forward skills of Nnemkadi Ogwumike will be most instrumental.
- Nadezhda have already beaten Kursk twice this season in the Russian Premier League.
- Dynamo Kursk are efficient offensively as they have the best field goal record in the competition having shot 47.2% from the field and also lead the way in assists with 18.1 per game.
- Nadezhda may have to raise their perimeter game as they have struggled hugely this season and at 27.6%, have the most blunted record from downtown of those teams remaining.

This is the tie which seems to have got everyone talking, with Schio having posted the best Regular Season campaign in their history and now holding a home advantage against the defending champions, who are under some pressure to avoid losing their grip on their crown at this stage. In contrast, the Italians are eyeing up a historic first ever Final Four berth and in the dynamic Jolene Anderson on the wing, have a do-it-all star who can light it up. Ashley Walker has had a solid first year in the paint and the irrepressible Isabelle Yacoubou going up against Prague's 2015 Final Four MVP, Kia Vaughn will be monumental and a big factor. Prague have bulked up their options in the paint with the addition of Latvian Anete Steinberga and that could be important, while Schio must lock down the offence of Katerina Elhotova who can shoot her team to glory and change a game in the blink of an eye. Perhaps most decisive will be whether Sonja Petrovic plays any part in the series in the wake of her shoulder injury.
- Schio are the best offensive rebounders in EuroLeague Women with 14.2 per game, helped by Walker who is the best individual offensive rebounder with 3.8 per game.
- ZVVZ USK Prague are the best team left in the tournament for steals and harvest 8.6 per game.
- Prague playmaking queen Laia Palau is way out in front when it comes to handing out assists with a sensational 7.1 per game.

Wis
Universally lauded for courageously recovering from a shocking 0-4 start to the campaign, Jose Hernandez and his Wisla Can-Pack side now find themselves two wins away from the Final Four. It's a turnaround that was one of the stories of the Regular Season, but to progress past a team who finished 12-2 in Group A like Fenerbahce, they will need to write even more powerful and spectacular headlines. Fenerbahce have more than just an edge in depth, it is considerable. In Allie Quigley and Jantel Lavender, they have Wisla's two most productive players from 2014-15 who will post the biggest danger to their former club. With Anastasiya Verameyenka just about back to her best, the Belarusian will pose some match-up problems for Wisla. It would be a huge upset if Wisla get a win and to have any prospect of doing so, Spanish forward Laura Nicholls must produce and the onus will be on Yvonne Turner to continue her impressive numbers in the backcourt.
- Fenerbahce have the best home record in recent memory in the competition and their Regular Season loss to Schio last month was their first in five years; a record which summarises the scale of the task ahead for Wisla.
- Wisla will have to try and step it up on the glass as the difference is significant with Fenerbahce out-performing the visitors 40.7 to 31.6 boards per game. They are the best rebounding team in the tournament.
- Wisla are also the lowest scorers left in the competition and average just 58.9 points per game.
