Oleee .... Hoo ... Eeeeehhhhh

SPAIN COME TO TERMS WITH END OF A DREAM

FIBA BASKETBALL WORLD CUP
Pau Gasol, Spain, 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup
"It's part of sport, not always the favourite wins" - Pau Gasol
Spain went through the five stages of grief in the wake of their shock defeat to Francein the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and reached acceptance by Thursday.
Curiously it was a football player, Real Madrid and Spain captain Iker Casillas, who followed the quarter-final clash from a front row seat at the Palacio de los Deportes, that summed up the Spanish sentiment of the day after.
"The guys tried, they wanted it, but this is sport and we have to congratulate France because they played very well on the day," the goalkeeper said.
France, with their masterful tactical plan, succeeded in slowing down the pace of the game and with it they slowed down the Spanish fans' dream of re-conquering the world champion title after eight years, until it came to a halt.
"It was a dream, but the dream of everybody, first of all the team, the coaches and of the federation," Spain head coach Juan Orenga said.
"We created that dream ourselves in the previous games because we played great basketball, we played great defence and we beat every team by a clear margin.
"So everyone believed in us as much as we believed in ourselves.
"I know that everyone is disappointed, angry and sad right now, myself more than anyone else."
Pau Gasol, who played in the Wednesday game through injury, tried to put the shocking defeat into context.
"It's a very painful loss, it's comparable to the loss we had in Athens, in 2004, when we won every game of the championship, we got to the quarter-finals as the favourites and we lost," Gasol said.
"But it's part of sport, not always the favourite wins."
The last time that Spain failed to score more than 52 points in a game at a major tournament was in 1968.
The headline on Spanish sports daily Marca on Thursday read 'The Saddest Night of Spanish Basketball."
The title echoed the sentiment of Sergio Rodriguez, who declared that "this is my worse moment in my six years on the national team."
Jose Calderon on the other hand was more stoical.
"I don't think this is the worse defeat of the national team," the New York Knicks point guard said.
"On a night that all things have to go well, everything went wrong for and I think that's about it.
"France prepared the game really well, they defended better and they made their shots - there you have it."
Nonetheless, the Spanish press was in agreement on Thursday that this defeat signals the end of an era for Spanish basketball, with most predicting the retirement from international duty of the golden generation.
Almost every single veteran player on the Spanish side was asked the question, but nobody stated anything to that effect in the wake of Spain's quarter-final exit.
"Like I always say, you never know when it can be your last game, your last championship," Pau Gasol commented.
"I wish I could continue to play until I am 50, but I doubt it.
"I have a lot of fun playing with this team, playing for my country, it's a big honour and pride.
"But nothing is guaranteed in life and we have great young generations coming up and I am sure that our federation and our national teams will have a great future."
